It was early in the pandemic when my sleep tracker first made me panic. I was testing SleepScore, Wirecutter’s pick for the best sleep-tracking app, and I noticed that even though most of my data from the previous night (how much time I spent in light, deep, and REM sleep) was fairly normal, my breathing rate was twice as fast as usual. A quick Google search confirmed what I already knew—rapid breathing could be the symptom of a respiratory illness. My mind jumped to the of-the-moment conclusion: “Oh, my god, I have the coronavirus.”
