Editor’s note: The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Peloton have issued a voluntary recall of the Peloton Tread+ following more than 70 reported incidents, including one death of a child. Peloton has stopped the sale of the Tread+. Separately, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and Peloton have also recalled and stopped the sale of the Peloton Tread due to the potential of the touchscreen to detach and fall. The Tread debuted in the fall of 2020 and was sold as a “limited invitation-only release” from around November 2020 to March 2021. Customers who own either product are advised to “...immediately stop using it and contact Peloton for a full refund…”. According to the CPSC, Peloton’s Tread+ (originally called the Tread, which we review in this guide) “poses serious risks to children for abrasions, fractures, and death.” Our review, below, was reported and written before news of injuries or a recall of these treadmills.
Peloton—perhaps best known for its indoor-cycling bike—introduced the Peloton Tread in 2018. Shortly after its debut, over four weeks we had 15 runners test the treadmill, which was renamed the Tread+ in late 2020, as well as Peloton’s digital classes. As fun as this treadmill is to use and as solid as its content is, the high price—north of $4,000—and weak warranty should give pause to all but the most fervent Peloton devotees. But if you prefer to work out at home right now and expect to do so (happily) for several years, it could be worth the investment.
