Among all of the natural disasters people face, wildfires are unique. Unlike hurricanes, wildfires can be fought. Unlike tornadoes, wildfires can be contained. And we can see them coming, unlike earthquakes. But wildfires used to be a mostly distant and containable threat, and now they move too fast and burn too hot for us to have the same amount of control we once did.
