Why We Don’t Trust Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video—and You Shouldn’t Either

Smart-home enthusiasts are often drawn to Apple’s HomeKit platform for its relative simplicity and enhanced security measures. Similarly, Apple HomeKit Secure Video (HSV) for security cameras looks absolutely terrific—at least on paper. In the plus column, this streamlined video cloud service is secured by end-to-end encryption, the gold standard for protecting personal data on smart devices. (The encryption ensures that no one—not even Apple or law enforcement—can access your content without your permission.) In addition, HSV enables some smart features, such as face and object recognition, including people, animals, vehicles, and packages. It even allows you to mix and match cameras of different brands and integrate them with other smart-home devices. All of those capabilities are included with your subscription to Apple’s iCloud service, which automatically backs up all of your iOS, macOS, and iCloud for Windows devices.
